History

The area occupied by Jordan was conquered by the Arabs in the 7th century AD. Later it became part of the Ottoman Empire. It was occupied in 1917 Britain, which pledged to support a Jewish national homeland there. In 1921, the land east of the Jordan was detached to form Transjordan. An independent kingdom was proclaimed in 1946. The West Bank and old city of Jerusalem were added to the kingdom during the war with Israel in 1948. The country then took its present name. During the Six Days War of 1967, the aforementioned territories were again lost to Israel.

For most of its history since independence from British administration in 1946, Jordan was ruled by King HUSSEIN (1953-1999). A pragmatic ruler, he successfully navigated competing pressures from the major powers (US, USSR, and UK), various Arab states, Israel, and a large internal Palestinian population, through several wars and coup attempts. In 1989 he resumed parliamentary elections and gradually permitted political liberalization; in 1994 a formal peace treaty was signed with Israel.
