History

Arabian and Persian traders visited the coast of Mozambique in the 10th century, several hundred years before its 'discovery' in the 15th century by Portuguese, who established a post there in 1505. It formed a slave-trade centre until 1878. The country was awarded to Portugal by the Berlin Conference in 1885. It became an overseas province of Portugal in 1951, and became an independent republic in 1975 after a long and bloody struggle. The only political party is the Frelimo, whose chairman is automatically the president: he nominates ministers and heads the cabinet. In the 1980's, severe drought and civil war caused famine and heavy loss of life.

The ruling party formally abandoned Marxism in 1989, and a new constitution the following year provided for multiparty elections and a free market economy. A UN-negotiated peace agreement with rebel forces ended the fighting in 1992.
