History

Qatar was part of a very fertile region in prehistoric times. Climatic changes and a lowering of sea-level caused the present-day desert conditions. Little is known of the history of Qatar until the 18th century AD when Arab Bedouins settled there. It was under Persian rule until the 19th century, and was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1872 until 1915. It became a British protectorate in 1916 and declared independence in 1971.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Qatari economy was crippled by a continuous siphoning off of petroleum revenues by the amir who had ruled the country since 1972. He was overthrown in a bloodless coup by his own son in 1995. Oil and natural gas revenues enable Qatar to have a per capita income not far below the leading industrial countries of Western Europe.
