History

The first inhabitants of Syria were the Armenians, who settled in the area more than 5000 years ago. The first Syrian kingdom was founded 3000 about years BC.Syria was ruled by the Ottoman Turks from 1516 until 1918. It was made a French mandate in 1920. Proclaimed a republic in 1941, full independence came in 1944. Syria joined Egypt in the United Arab Republic in 1958, but seceded in 1961. 

In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Syria lost the Golan Heights to Israel. Since 1976, Syrian troops have been stationed in Lebanon, ostensibly in a peacekeeping capacity. Talks with Israel over the return of the Golan Heights have recently been revived.
